Initially, the UP government planned to open Noida International Airport, or Jewar Airport, in September 2024. Then, it was rescheduled for April 17, 2025, and now May 15, 2025, is the new launch date for Jewar International Airport. As per reports, domestic flights will run from May 15, and international flights will take off from June 25, 2025.
Witnessing huge and multiple delays, the Honourable Chief Minister of UP, Yogi Adityanath, held a meeting with officials over his dissatisfaction with the delays, especially the delay with the terminal building. The airport is running six months behind its schedule.
The original deadline was September 29, 2024, but it was revised to April 2025. Now, it's clear the project will miss the April 2025 deadline. Due to the delays, the Uttar Pradesh government has directed the concessionaire, YIAPL, to follow the contract agreement, which imposes a fine of Rs 10 lakh per day for delays.
This penalty, effective from January 1, 2025, amounts to Rs 3 crore per month. The CEO of Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL), Arun Vir Singh, mentioned that the delay was due to several factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and an extended monsoon season in 2024.
A grace period of three months has been given, but the daily penalty is still enforced. NIAL has asked YIAPL to provide a "catch-up" plan to avoid missing the third revised deadline. Currently, 8,000 workers are deployed at the site, but the company will deploy more workers to expedite the construction progress to match the new deadline and avoid more penalties.
The delay is mainly attributed to the terminal building's construction, particularly its iron façade design. The terminal is designed with elements resembling the ghats of Varanasi and Haridwar, and a wavy roof inspired by rivers. Six aerobridges will be available initially, instead of the planned 10.
